Pre-season time – using football passing drill
The pre-season is a time to develop your team’s physical condition. Of course, we should never neglect the technical and tactical aspects of the game. For this reason, exercises that combine physical conditions with technical or tactical elements are mandatory. Below I present a football passing drill for pre-season period.
Finding space and time in tight areas requires coordinated movements without the ball. The area of the center is where the opponents pay a lot of attention to close any gap. So, the midfielders must be able to constantly move to create spaces for themselves and their teammates and take advantage of them.
Especially for a team who wishes to play a Positional Play game, the positional rotation is mandatory and they can appear anywhere on the pitch.

Rotating positions is a great way to do this and, with this simple football passing drill, you can teach your players how.
The MBP School of Coaches presented a great article on the midfield line basic fundamentals. You can read it here.
The drill combines several elements:
- Passing and receiving technique
- Timing in movements
- Automation of the midfield rotation
- Communication
- Adding predefined build-up combination
- Endurance – running (depending o the number of the ball in the game the intensity can be high or low)
To get more theoretical information on the midfielder player’s profiles, you can read my article “The ideal player’s profile in each position in a Positional Play team – Part 3” where I present the ideal midfield trio.
In this part I would like to mention that many of my coaching knowledge it is obtained from watching webinars, interviews, and many recorded drills on one of the best platforms I know, the Coaches Voice Academy. Check it out!!!
