Football Training Drill – How to defend in wide and central areas

This is a football training drill for the coach to transfer basic tactical instructions for defending in wide and central areas.

Description of the Football Training Drill:

The drill starts with a pass to one of the wingers. The winger will go 1 v 1 with the full back. The player can either dribble inside to shoot or outside for a cross. The rest of the defending line will adjust their position to deal with the cross and to defend against the one striker.

After the end of the 1st action, a new ball is served centrally for a 3 v 2 situation. The two full backs will make the runs to behave properly for keeping the offside line. The 3 v 2 takes place only in the red zone.

After the end of the 2nd action, a new ball is served to the other winger to make the same move as the 1st action.

After the end of all actions, new players can be brought in or continue to train the same defending line.
