The different variations

Below is a 3-4-3 with narrow wingers that can also be considered as a 3-4-2-1. This a  formation that Antonio Conte used during his time with Chelsea. In the 2016 – 2017 season, Conte managed to win the Premier League having Eden Hazard and Pedro playing as inside wingers and Diego Costa as his target man.

The front three can be positioned in either an expansive or a narrow formation. The decision rests with the coach, based on the players’ personal characteristics. A pivotal consideration lies in the wing-backs’ physical prowess and technical skills. Should a team feature full-backs lacking the physical capacity to maintain a higher position across the field and the offensive proficiency to engage in the opponent’s final third, a formation employing wide forwards would be more fitting.

3-4-3 formation in rhombus

However, the 3-4-3 formation does come with its own set of challenges. One of the main disadvantages is the potential vulnerability in defense. With only three defenders, the team may struggle to cover the entire width of the pitch. This can leave gaps for the opposition players to exploit, especially on the flanks. It also requires the midfielders to work tirelessly to support both the attack and defense, making it physically demanding.

The great Johan Cruyff successfully implemented a 3-4-3 with rhombus during his time with Barcelona. His 1988 – 1994 Dream Team shocked the world with pure dominance on the pitch, an unstoppable attacking force, and beautiful football. As a number 6 in front of the three center backs, Pepe Guardiola learned the secrets of Total Football and Positional Play. Johan showed the soccer world that a structure with 3 defenders can also have an attacking tactical intention and not only a defensive one.

Another notable example is the Barcelona team under Pep Guardiola during the La Liga and Champions League 2011 – 2012 season. That summer, Barcelona brought to Camp Nou Cesc Fàbregas, an exceptional midfielder. Guardiola, in an effort to put in the starting-11 all his best players, changed his favorite 4-3-3 for a 3-4-3 formation with Fabrecas playing as a number 10 behind Lionel Messi.

3-4-3 formation weakness

Another method of implementing a 3-4-3 formation involves employing a false center forward, thereby reconfiguring the setup to a 3-4-1-2 formation. This strategic adjustment amplifies the team’s offensive capabilities by engaging in a direct man-to-man approach against the opponent’s defensive line or potentially establishing a numerical overload of +1.

Key roles and responsibilities in the 3-4-3 formation

To successfully implement the 3-4-3 formation, it is crucial to understand the roles and responsibilities of each player. The three forwards are responsible for providing the cutting edge in attack. The central forward acts as the target man, holding up the ball and bringing others into play unless the team uses a 3-4-1-2 formation, and the center forward responsibility is to drop deep, as a false 9, and offer passing options for short combinations in the center of the pitch. The wide forwards provide width and are tasked with stretching the opposition’s defense.
